Department of Physics
About Department
The Department of Physics came into existence in 2012 along with four other departments when the LNMIIT switched over from being a single (combined) entity to having a department structure. However, from its very inception, the physics faculty members were an integral part of the journey. Today the department has eleven faculty members. All faculty members have excellent academic credentials. They have a broad range of research interests covering the very fundamental aspects of nature as well as the applied and engineering aspects of Physics. Areas of interest and active research include Cosmology, High Energy Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Material Science, Biophysics, Optics, Photovoltaics, Biosensors and Nanotechnology. The approaches include experimental, theoretical and computational.
The department offers Ph.D. as well as M.Sc. degrees in Physics. In addition, the department offers core (theory and laboratory) courses and also elective courses to all the branches of the B.Tech. program of the institute. The M.Sc. Physics program was started in the year 2016 and the first batch graduated in 2018. Till date, seven Ph.D. scholars have graduated from this department. The alumni of the department are currently placed at various reputed organizations. At present, eight Ph.D. scholars are enrolled in the Ph.D. program.
The faculty members of the physics department are actively carrying out research at the individual level as well as in collaboration with researchers from other reputed institutes in India and abroad. Gradually, we are trying to set up state of the art facilities to support our research as well as our academic program with monetary and infrastructural support from the institute and also from support received from various government-sponsored projects. Currently, we are having a good number of externally (government) funded projects (SERB-DST, BRICS Multilateral Research and Development Project, DST- INDO–Russia joint project, India-Taiwan Program of Cooperation in Science & Technology) to support our research.
On the departmental webpage, you will find more details about the academic programs offered as well as the details of individual faculty members and their research interests.
Aim
The department aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles and laws that govern the physical world. And to educate students in the principles, theories, and experimental methods of physics. This includes developing a strong foundation in core areas such as classical mechanics, electromagnetism thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, and statistical mechanics. Physics is known for its emphasis on logical thinking, mathematical modeling, and experimentation. Through coursework and laboratory experiences, students learn to approach complex problems.
Vision
To establish a platform for the dissemination and creation of knowledge through teaching and research in Physics at various levels. To help create a scientific society which encourages logical thinking.
